This is for anyone who stays at Marriott properties a few times a year and wants to know whether India's only Marriott co-brand card earns its fee. It settles the value of the Free Night Awards in rupees, what Silver Elite and the Elite Night Credits actually do, why the earn rate is low, and how the card fits next to a premium HDFC card.
Quick Answer: The Marriott Bonvoy HDFC card costs ₹3,000 + GST (₹3,540) with no waiver, gives a Free Night Award worth about ₹8,000 on joining and again at ₹6 lakh, ₹9 lakh and ₹15 lakh of annual spend, plus Silver Elite and 12 domestic lounge visits; it earns a poor 0.67% on ordinary spend, so hold it for the nights and the status, not as a daily driver.
The card at a glance

| Annual fee | ₹3,000 + GST (₹3,540) |

| Welcome benefit | 1 Free Night Award (up to 15,000 points), 10 Elite Night Credits and Silver Elite status, on a ₹500 transaction or fee levy |
| Earn at Marriott hotels | 8 Bonvoy points per ₹150, about 2.67% |

Two things changed at our September 2026 read of the HDFC page. The base earn is 2 points per ₹150, not the 4 recorded earlier, which halves the ordinary-spend rate. And the ₹3 lakh fee waiver that had been recorded was removed, because the product FAQ states there is no waiver under the Marriott programme. Both cut the card's value for anyone using it as a general card; neither touches the Free Night Awards, which are the reason to hold it.
What the Free Night Award is worth
A Free Night Award redeems one night at any Marriott Bonvoy hotel where the standard award rate is 15,000 points or less. In India that covers most Courtyard, Fairfield and Four Points properties and many full-service Marriott and Sheraton hotels on off-peak dates, where the cash rate for the same room runs ₹6,000 to ₹12,000. A working value of ₹8,000 a night is conservative; a well-chosen redemption at a resort in season can clear ₹12,000.
| Trigger | Award | Working value |
|---|---|---|
| Joining, on a ₹500 transaction or fee levy | 1 night, up to 15,000 points | ₹8,000 |
| ₹6 lakh annual spend | 1 night | ₹8,000 |
| ₹9 lakh annual spend | 1 night | ₹8,000 |
| ₹15 lakh annual spend | 1 night | ₹8,000 |
The joining award alone returns the ₹3,540 fee more than twice. The milestone awards are where the card's economics live for heavy spenders: ₹15 lakh through the card in a year returns three nights, about ₹24,000, plus 20,000 base points, on a ₹3,540 fee. Awards are issued to your Bonvoy account and carry the programme's own expiry, so plan the stay within the year.
Silver Elite and the Elite Night Credits
Silver Elite is Marriott's entry tier and is modest on its own: 10% bonus points on paid stays, priority late checkout on request, a members-only reservation line. The 10 Elite Night Credits are the more useful half of the welcome package. Gold Elite needs 25 qualifying nights a year and brings room upgrades, 2 pm late checkout and 25% bonus points; with 10 credits from the card, a cardholder who stays 15 nights a year reaches Gold. For frequent Marriott guests that is the benefit that changes the experience of every stay, and it costs nothing beyond the fee.
Rewards in practice
Marriott Bonvoy points are valued at a conservative ₹0.50 each. The card's own earn rates:
| Annual spend, split | Points | Value | Free Nights | Total value | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹3 lakh: ₹50,000 at Marriott, ₹1 lakh travel and dining, ₹1.5 lakh other | 2,667 + 2,667 + 2,000 = 7,333 | ₹3,667 | Joining night only, ₹8,000 | ₹11,667 | ₹3,540 |
| ₹6 lakh: ₹1 lakh at Marriott, ₹2 lakh travel and dining, ₹3 lakh other | 5,333 + 5,333 + 4,000 = 14,667 | ₹7,333 | Joining + ₹6 lakh night, ₹16,000 | ₹23,333 | ₹3,540 |
| ₹15 lakh: ₹2 lakh at Marriott, ₹5 lakh travel and dining, ₹8 lakh other | 10,667 + 13,333 + 10,667 = 34,667 | ₹17,333 | 4 nights, ₹32,000 | ₹49,333 | ₹3,540 |
The Free Nights are two thirds of the value at every spend level. The points are a side benefit: on ₹8 lakh of ordinary spend the card earns ₹5,333 of Bonvoy points where Infinia would earn ₹26,600 of Reward Points. Routing ordinary spend through this card to chase the ₹6 lakh milestone costs more in foregone rewards than the night is worth unless the alternative card is weak.
Lounges and golf
Twelve domestic lounge visits a year for the primary and add-on cardholders is a real benefit at this fee, comparable to Regalia Gold's 12, and it has no spend gate. Two golf lessons a quarter at driving ranges and two course accesses a quarter at select courses are more than most ₹3,000 cards offer. There is no international lounge access and the forex markup is 3.5%, so this is not the card to carry abroad; use it to pay the hotel bill at the Marriott abroad if the 8-points-per-₹150 rate outweighs the markup, and something else for everything else.
Marriott Bonvoy HDFC vs Infinia
| Feature | Marriott Bonvoy HDFC | Infinia Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹3,000 + GST (₹3,540), never waived | ₹12,500 + GST (₹14,750), waived at ₹10 lakh |
| Ordinary spend | 0.67% in Bonvoy points | 3.33% in Reward Points at ₹1 on SmartBuy |
| Marriott hotel spend | 2.67% in Bonvoy points | 3.33% base, 10X via SmartBuy hotels |
| Free nights | Up to 4 a year | None; points can book hotels at ₹1 each |
| Status | Silver Elite, 10 night credits | Club Marriott first-year membership |
| Lounges | 12 domestic | Unlimited domestic and international |
| Forex | 3.5% | 2% |
| Availability | Direct application | Invitation only |
They are not substitutes. Infinia is the better card for every rupee of spend, including at Marriott hotels if you book through SmartBuy. The Marriott card is the better card for the fee: ₹3,540 buys a night worth ₹8,000 and elite credits that Infinia does not offer. Someone who stays at Marriott properties holds both and uses the Marriott card for the fee, the joining night, and the milestone nights only if their spend is heading past ₹6 lakh anyway. The SmartBuy transfer partners guide covers how Infinia points reach hotel programmes.
Who should get it
Get it if:
- You stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels at least twice a year; the joining night alone returns the fee.
- You stay 15 or more nights a year and want Gold Elite; the 10 night credits get you there.
- You want 12 domestic lounge visits and some golf for ₹3,540 without a spend gate.
Skip it if:
- You do not stay at Marriott properties; the earn rate is too low for anything else.
- You want a single card for daily spend; Regalia Gold at ₹2,950 with a ₹4 lakh waiver earns nearly twice as much.
- You spend abroad; 3.5% forex and no international lounges.
Break-even
| Spend | Points value | Free Nights | Total | Fee | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Any, year one | From ₹0 | ₹8,000 (joining) | ₹8,000+ | ₹3,540 | Positive by ₹4,460 before any spend |
| ₹3 lakh, year two onward | About ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 | None | About ₹3,500 | ₹3,540 | Roughly break-even on points alone |
| ₹6 lakh, year two onward | About ₹7,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹15,000 | ₹3,540 | Positive by about ₹11,500 |
Year one is always positive because of the joining night. From year two the card breaks even at about ₹3 lakh of spend on points alone, and the ₹6 lakh milestone makes it clearly positive. The honest question is not whether it beats its fee, which it does, but whether the spend you route through it would earn more elsewhere; usually it would, so keep the routing to hotel stays and the milestone only when you are close.
