HDFC SmartBuy Transfer Partners: Airmiles Ratios, Caps and the Best Redemptions

This is for HDFC cardholders sitting on a Reward Points balance and trying to work out whether to spend it on SmartBuy or convert it to airline miles. It settles the partner list, the ratio that applies to your card, the caps that limit both earning and redemption, and how the paths compare in rupees.

Quick Answer: On Infinia and Diners Club Black, Reward Points are worth a flat ₹1 on SmartBuy flights and hotels and convert at 1:1 to KrisFlyer, Flying Blue and Vietnam Airlines and 2:1 to British Airways, Qatar and Etihad; transfer only for awards where a mile is worth more than ₹1, and mind the 1.5 lakh-point monthly cap.

What SmartBuy is

SmartBuy is HDFC's rewards portal. It does three things for a cardholder: it multiplies points on flights, hotels and vouchers bought through it (10X on Infinia and Diners Club Black for hotels, 10X or 5X for flights, up to 10X on Regalia Gold hotels), it redeems Reward Points at their best fixed value for those same bookings, and it is where airmiles transfers are requested. The portal itself was not reachable from our network during the September 2026 audit, so the figures below come from HDFC's Infinia product page, which carries the redemption values and caps, and from the transfer data recorded against each card.

Partners and ratios by card

The transfer ratio depends on which card earned the points. Infinia and Diners Club Black (plastic and Metal) share the premium ratios; Regalia Gold sits lower.

Programme Type Infinia and Diners Club Black Regalia Gold
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Airline 1 point = 1 mile Available, lower ratio
Air France-KLM Flying Blue Airline 1 point = 1 mile Not listed
Vietnam Airlines Lotusmiles Airline 1 point = 1 mile Not listed
British Airways Avios Airline 2 points = 1 Avios Available, lower ratio
Qatar Airways Avios Airline 2 points = 1 Avios Not listed
Etihad Guest Airline 2 points = 1 mile Not listed

HDFC's own Infinia page states the airmiles conversion as "up to 1 airmile" per Reward Point, which is the 1:1 tier. The partner list changes; HDFC added and removed programmes in 2024 and the transfer data above reflects what was recorded against the Diners Club Black Metal and Regalia Gold cards at our last verification. Check the SmartBuy airmiles page for the live list before transferring, because a partner that has dropped to 2:1 halves the value of the transfer.

What a point is worth on each path

Redemption path Infinia and Diners Club Black Regalia Gold
SmartBuy flights and hotels ₹1.00 ₹0.50
Apple products and Tanishq vouchers (SmartBuy) ₹1.00, up to 70% of the bill Not offered at this value
Airmiles transfer, 1:1 partners 1 mile, typically ₹0.80 to ₹2.00 depending on the award Lower ratio
Airmiles transfer, 2:1 partners Half a mile, typically ₹0.40 to ₹1.00 Lower ratio
HDFC Rewards Gold Catalogue Not the main path ₹0.65
Other gift vouchers ₹0.50 ₹0.35
Statement credit ₹0.30 ₹0.20

The table makes the decision structure clear. On the premium cards, SmartBuy travel at ₹1 is the floor for a good redemption; a transfer only beats it when the mile is worth more than ₹1 on the award you actually book. Statement credit at ₹0.30 is the path to avoid.

The caps

HDFC caps both what you can earn through SmartBuy and what you can redeem.

Earning caps. The 10X SmartBuy bonus is limited to 15,000 bonus points a month on Infinia (about ₹4.5 lakh of portal spend) and 10,000 on Diners Club Black Metal (about ₹3.3 lakh). Regalia Gold's SmartBuy accelerator is capped at 4,000 points a month across flights, vouchers and hotels, with a 2,000-point daily cap. Above the cap, portal spend earns the base 5 points per ₹150 (or 5 per ₹200 on Regalia Gold).

Redemption caps (Infinia, from the product page). A maximum of 2 lakh Reward Points redeemed in a statement cycle. Flights, hotels and airmiles capped at 1.5 lakh points a month. Cashback against the statement balance capped at 50,000 points a month. Apple products and Tanishq vouchers paid up to 70% with points, the rest on the card. Tanishq vouchers are further capped at 50,000 points a quarter.

For most cardholders the earning caps matter more than the redemption caps. Someone booking ₹5 lakh of hotels through SmartBuy in a month on Infinia earns the 10X bonus on the first ₹4.5 lakh and base points on the rest.

Worked example: a ₹10 lakh year on Infinia

Take an Infinia cardholder spending ₹10 lakh a year: ₹7 lakh of ordinary spend and ₹3 lakh of flights and hotels booked through SmartBuy, spread across the year so no monthly cap binds.

Source Points
₹7 lakh at 5 points per ₹150 23,333
₹3 lakh on SmartBuy at 10X (50 points per ₹150) 1,00,000
Renewal benefit 12,500
Total 1,35,833

Now the three ways to spend them:

Path Value
SmartBuy flights and hotels at ₹1 ₹1,35,833
Transfer to KrisFlyer at 1:1, used on a Delhi to Singapore business-class award at about ₹1.90 a mile About ₹2,58,000
Transfer to British Airways Avios at 2:1, used on a short-haul economy award at about ₹1.20 an Avios About ₹81,500
Statement credit at ₹0.30 ₹40,750

The spread between the best and worst path is six to one on the same points. The KrisFlyer transfer wins by a wide margin, but only because the example uses a business-class award; the same miles on an economy ticket that would have cost ₹12,000 are worth less than the ₹1 SmartBuy floor. The Avios path at 2:1 loses to SmartBuy on almost any award.

How to decide, in order

  1. Price the SmartBuy booking first. At ₹1 a point on Infinia or Diners Club Black, that is your floor and it has no blackout dates.
  2. Find the specific award you want in the partner programme and note the miles required and the cash fare for the same seat.
  3. Divide the cash fare by the Reward Points needed (miles for 1:1 partners, twice the miles for 2:1 partners). If the answer is above ₹1, transfer. If not, book on SmartBuy.
  4. Check the live partner list and ratio on the SmartBuy airmiles page before requesting the transfer; ratios have changed before.
  5. Transfer only what the award needs. Transferred miles sit under the airline's expiry rules and cannot come back.

Regalia Gold holders

The maths is different one tier down. Regalia Gold points are worth ₹0.50 on SmartBuy travel and ₹0.65 on the Gold Catalogue, and the transfer ratio to KrisFlyer and Avios is lower than the premium cards'. For most Regalia Gold holders the Gold Catalogue at ₹0.65 or SmartBuy at ₹0.50 is the practical ceiling, and the card's value lies in its milestones (₹1,500 vouchers quarterly at ₹1.5 lakh, ₹5,000 flight vouchers at ₹5 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh) rather than in transfers. The Regalia Gold vs Regalia comparison covers those.

Who should transfer

Transfer if:

  • You hold Infinia or Diners Club Black Metal and have a business or first-class award in mind on KrisFlyer, Flying Blue or a partner they book.
  • The award values a mile above ₹1 after you have checked the live ratio.

Book on SmartBuy if:

  • You want economy tickets, domestic flights or hotels; the ₹1 floor beats most economy awards.
  • You hold Regalia Gold, where the transfer ratio makes SmartBuy or the Gold Catalogue the better path.
  • You are under the 1.5 lakh monthly cap and want certainty.

Never:

  • Take statement credit on a premium card; ₹0.30 a point throws away 70% of the value.
  • Transfer speculatively to "have miles ready"; they expire on the airline's clock.
