How to Get HDFC Diners Club Black Metal: Eligibility and Routes

This is for anyone who has decided the Diners Club Black Metal is the HDFC card they want and needs to know whether they can get it, and how. It settles the bank's published bar, the criterion that actually decides applications, the two routes in, and what the card costs before and after the waiver.

Quick Answer: You need ₹2.5 lakh of net monthly income (or ₹30 lakh ITR), a 750+ score and, ideally, an existing HDFC card with a ₹5 lakh limit; the card costs ₹10,000 + GST (₹11,800), waived at ₹8 lakh of annual spend, and the plastic Diners Club Black is no longer issued.

Black Metal vs the old Diners Club Black

HDFC now sells only the Metal Edition. The plastic Diners Club Black showed "not accepting new applications" on the bank's page at our last check on 2026-09-17, with applicants directed to the Metal Edition. If you hold the plastic card, nothing changes for you; if you are applying, the Metal card is the one on offer.

Feature Diners Club Black (plastic, closed) Diners Club Black Metal

Income bar ₹1.75 lakh a month, ₹21 lakh ITR ₹2.5 lakh a month, ₹30 lakh ITR

The Metal card asks for more income and more spend for the waiver, and it dropped the monthly voucher. In exchange the SmartBuy bonus cap rose and the welcome pack is easier to trigger.

Eligibility: the published bar

Requirement What HDFC asks for
Income, salaried ₹2.5 lakh net monthly
Income, self-employed ₹30 lakh annual ITR
Credit score 750 or above
Age 21 to 65; add-on cards from 18
Relationship Preferred HDFC Bank customers with an existing credit limit of ₹5 lakh or more
Residency Indian resident

The last row is the one that matters. HDFC issues most Black Metal cards to people it already knows, and "existing credit limit of ₹5 lakh or more" is a proxy for that: it means you hold an HDFC card (usually Regalia Gold or Diners Club Privilege) on which the bank has already extended a large limit, or a salary or savings relationship that justifies one. Applicants who clear the income bar but have no HDFC history get declined more often than the income figure suggests.

Route 1: direct application with an HDFC relationship

If you bank with HDFC and clear the income bar, the direct route works.

  1. Check NetBanking for a pre-approved offer. HDFC surfaces card offers under the Cards section and through its app; a pre-approved Black Metal offer is decided within days with no documents.
  2. If there is no offer, apply through the HDFC site with salary slips or ITR. Mention your existing HDFC relationship in the application.
  3. Expect a decision in two to three weeks for a documented application, and the metal card 7 to 10 working days after approval.
  4. Spend ₹1.5 lakh in the first 90 days to unlock the Club Marriott, Swiggy One and Amazon Prime memberships.

A salary account with HDFC, a fixed deposit or a home loan all count as relationship. If you have none, opening a savings account and routing salary through it for six months before applying is the cheapest way to change the answer.

Route 2: upgrade from Regalia Gold or Diners Club Privilege

This is how most Black Metal holders got the card. HDFC runs an informal but well-understood ladder, covered in the upgrade ladder guide, and Black Metal is the rung above Regalia Gold and Diners Club Privilege.

The upgrade profile:

  • The current card held for 12 months with no late payments.
  • Annual spend of ₹5 lakh or more, and ideally near the ₹8 lakh Black Metal waiver, so the bank sees you as a customer who will keep the card active.
  • Income that has grown to ₹2.5 lakh a month, shown in a new ITR or salary slip.
  • Regular SmartBuy use, which HDFC reads as engagement with its ecosystem.
  • Utilisation under 30% and a credit limit that has already been enhanced at least once.

Request the upgrade through NetBanking (Cards, then Card Upgrade) or the card helpline, and attach the new income documents. Reward Points carry across because Regalia Gold, Diners Club Privilege and Black Metal all earn HDFC Reward Points; their value rises on the new card, since Black Metal points redeem at ₹1 on SmartBuy flights and hotels against ₹0.50 on Regalia Gold. Do not redeem before the upgrade.

Route 3: cold application

A documented application with no HDFC relationship is possible and does sometimes succeed at high incomes, but it is the weakest route. If it is declined, the fix is not to reapply; it is to get onto the ladder with Regalia Gold or Diners Club Privilege and upgrade a year later.

Documents to prepare

  • Income proof: three months of salary slips and the latest Form 16, or two years of ITR with computation of income for the self-employed.
  • Identity proof: PAN, plus Aadhaar or passport.
  • Address proof: Aadhaar, passport, utility bill or rent agreement.
  • Bank statements: three months, showing salary credits.
  • Employment proof: offer letter or employee ID for salaried applicants; business registration for the self-employed.

For a pre-approved offer or an upgrade, KYC is already on file and only fresh income proof, if anything, is needed.

Timeline

Stage Pre-approved offer Documented application Upgrade
Application Instant, in NetBanking Same day, online Same day, NetBanking or helpline
Decision Within a week 2 to 3 weeks About 10 working days
Card dispatch 7 to 10 working days 7 to 10 working days 7 to 10 working days
Welcome pack After ₹1.5 lakh spend in 90 days Same Same

What it costs and what it returns

Item Amount
Joining fee ₹10,000 + GST (₹11,800)
Welcome pack Club Marriott, Swiggy One, Amazon Prime on ₹1.5 lakh in 90 days, roughly ₹8,000 of memberships
Points at ₹8 lakh of spend 26,700 Reward Points, worth ₹26,700 on SmartBuy flights and hotels
Quarterly milestone 10,000 points in any quarter with ₹4 lakh of spend
Fee from year two at ₹8 lakh spend ₹0, waived

At the waiver threshold the card returns more than twice its fee in points before any SmartBuy multiplier. Route flights and hotels through SmartBuy and the 10X hotel and 5X flight rates, capped at 10,000 bonus points a month, add up to ₹1.2 lakh of value a year for someone who books ₹1 lakh of travel a month.

Who should get it

Get it if:

  • Your annual spend is ₹8 lakh or more, so the fee is waived and the 3.33% base rate is working on real volume.
  • You book flights and hotels and will route them through SmartBuy.
  • You already hold Regalia Gold or Diners Club Privilege with a year of clean history.
  • You want unlimited lounges for yourself and an add-on cardholder.

Skip it if:

  • Your spend is under ₹5 lakh a year; Regalia Gold at ₹2,950 with a ₹4 lakh waiver is the better fit.
  • Most of your spend is at small merchants that do not take Diners Club; the Regalia track avoids the acceptance problem.
  • You want Infinia. Black Metal is the usual step before it, but if the relationship manager is already offering Infinia, take that instead; the Infinia guide explains why.

If the application is rejected

  • Income below ₹2.5 lakh a month: apply for Regalia Gold (₹1 lakh a month, ₹1.5 lakh for private-sector employees) and upgrade in a year.
  • No HDFC relationship or low existing limit: open a salary or savings account, hold an entry HDFC card, and ask for a limit enhancement before reapplying.
  • Score or utilisation: bring utilisation under 30% on every card, clear anything overdue, and avoid new enquiries for six months.
  • Too many recent applications: pause for six months. HDFC weighs enquiries heavily on premium cards.

Wait at least six months between applications, and make the second one an upgrade request rather than a fresh application.

Common questions

What is the eligibility? ₹2.5 lakh net a month or ₹30 lakh ITR, 750+ score, and preferably an existing HDFC card with a ₹5 lakh limit.

Can I still get the plastic Diners Club Black? No; HDFC closed it to new applicants and issues the Metal Edition.

What does it cost? ₹10,000 + GST (₹11,800), waived at ₹8 lakh of spend, with a membership welcome pack on ₹1.5 lakh in 90 days.

Is it an upgrade from Regalia Gold? Yes, the most common one; points carry across and rise in value.

How long does it take? A week on a pre-approved offer, two to three weeks on documents, about 10 working days for an upgrade.
