HDFC Infinia vs Diners Club Black Metal: Which Is Worth the Fee

HDFC's two premium cards side by side: fees after GST, the same 5-points-per-₹150 base rate, the different SmartBuy caps, lounge and golf, the Diners acceptance problem, and who should hold which.

hdfc comparison infinia diners premium

This is for anyone deciding between HDFC's two premium cards, or holding one and wondering whether the other is worth chasing. It settles the comparison in numbers: what each costs after GST, what a rupee of spend earns on each, where the SmartBuy caps bite, and which one you can actually get.

Quick Answer: The two cards earn the same 5 points per ₹150 and give the same unlimited lounges; Infinia costs ₹2,950 more a year but pays that back and more through a 12,500-point renewal bonus, a higher SmartBuy cap and points on utilities; the practical difference is that Diners Club Black Metal can be applied for and Infinia cannot.

Note that the plastic Diners Club Black is closed to new applicants; every comparison here is with the Metal Edition, which is the card on offer.

The base rate is the same; the extras are not

Both cards earn 5 Reward Points per ₹150 on retail spend, and both value those points at ₹1 on SmartBuy flights and hotels, so the headline rate is 3.33% on either. The differences are at the edges.

Infinia earns on categories the Diners card excludes. HDFC's product page lists insurance, utilities and education as earning the full rate on Infinia. On Diners Club Black Metal these follow the standard HDFC rules, which cap or exclude several of them. For someone paying ₹1 lakh of insurance premiums a year through the card, that is about ₹3,300 of extra value on Infinia.

Infinia's SmartBuy cap is 50% higher. The 10X bonus on SmartBuy flights and hotels is capped at 15,000 bonus points a month on Infinia and 10,000 on Diners Club Black Metal, and the Diners card pays only 5X on flights. At ₹1 a point, that is up to ₹5,000 a month more in portal value on Infinia for someone who books enough travel to hit both caps. Infinia also earns 5X on SmartBuy instant vouchers for Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra, which the Diners card does not match.

Diners Club Black Metal has the quarterly milestone. 10,000 points in any calendar quarter with ₹4 lakh of spend, worth ₹10,000, and there is nothing equivalent on Infinia. For a steady ₹1.35 lakh a month of spend, that is ₹40,000 of extra value a year on the Diners card, which is more than the SmartBuy cap difference for most people.

Infinia has the renewal bonus. 12,500 points on every renewal, worth ₹12,500 on SmartBuy. That turns the ₹14,750 fee into a net cost of about ₹2,250, before any waiver. The Diners card's ₹11,800 fee is a real cost unless you clear ₹8 lakh.

Rewards in practice

Ordinary spend spread across the year, no SmartBuy routing, points valued at ₹1 for SmartBuy travel redemption. The Diners milestone assumes spend is even across quarters.

Annual spend Diners Club Black Metal Infinia Metal
₹5 lakh 16,650 points = ₹16,650; fee ₹11,800 charged 16,650 points + 12,500 renewal = ₹29,150; fee ₹14,750 charged
₹10 lakh 33,300 points = ₹33,300; fee waived; no quarter reaches ₹4 lakh 33,300 + 12,500 = ₹45,800; fee waived
₹16 lakh (₹4 lakh a quarter) 53,300 points + 40,000 milestone = ₹93,300; fee waived 53,300 + 12,500 = ₹65,800; fee waived
₹20 lakh 66,600 + 40,000 milestone = ₹1,06,600 66,600 + 12,500 = ₹79,100

The middle two rows show something the fee comparison hides: at ₹4 lakh a quarter, Diners Club Black Metal out-earns Infinia by a wide margin because of the milestone. Infinia wins below that spend (renewal bonus) and on SmartBuy-heavy or utility-heavy spend (higher caps, more categories), but on plain retail spend at ₹16 lakh or more the Diners card is the better earner.

Add SmartBuy travel and the gap narrows. ₹1 lakh a month of SmartBuy hotel bookings earns 10X on both cards; the Diners card hits its 10,000-point bonus cap at about ₹33,000 of that, while Infinia's 15,000 cap covers ₹50,000. That is ₹5,000 a month of extra value on Infinia, or ₹60,000 a year, which is enough to overturn the milestone advantage for heavy portal users.

Lounges, golf and the things that are not points

Lounge access is unlimited, domestic and international, on both cards, for the primary and add-on cardholders. Infinia adds guest access at select airports; the Diners card does not. For most people this is a draw.

Golf is not. Infinia gives unlimited complimentary games with green fees waived, at leading courses in India and select international ones, excluding caddy, cart and tips. Diners Club Black Metal gives six games a quarter, 24 a year, through the concierge. A regular golfer who plays weekly uses all of Infinia's allowance and would run out on the Diners card.

Insurance is close: ₹2 crore of air accident cover on the Diners card against ₹3 crore on Infinia, ₹50 lakh of emergency overseas hospitalisation on both, ₹9 lakh of credit liability cover on both.

The Diners acceptance problem

Diners Club runs on the Discover network. Acceptance in India has improved and covers most large merchants, online platforms, hotel chains and airlines, but smaller merchants, many fuel stations and some point-of-sale terminals only take Visa, Mastercard and RuPay. Diners Club Black Metal holders learn to carry a second card.

Infinia is issued on Visa and Mastercard and has no such gap. If your spend is concentrated at neighbourhood merchants, kirana stores, local restaurants and fuel pumps, that difference is worth more than any of the reward math above, because points you cannot earn are worth nothing. If your spend is online, at large retailers and on travel, the gap is small.

Who should get it

Get Diners Club Black Metal if:

  • You can apply now: ₹2.5 lakh a month of income or ₹30 lakh ITR, a 750+ score and an HDFC relationship.
  • Your spend runs at ₹4 lakh a quarter or more on ordinary retail, where the 10,000-point milestone makes it the better earner.
  • Your merchants take Diners Club, or you already carry a Visa card for the ones that do not.

Get Infinia if:

  • You are offered it. There is no application form; the Infinia guide covers how the invitation comes.
  • You route large travel spend through SmartBuy and would hit the Diners card's 10,000-point cap.
  • You pay insurance premiums, utilities or school fees through the card.
  • You play golf, or your spend is at merchants that do not take Diners Club.

Skip both if:

  • Your annual spend is under ₹5 lakh. Regalia Gold at ₹2,950 with a ₹4 lakh waiver gives 12 domestic and 6 international lounge visits and the SmartBuy multipliers at a quarter of the fee.

Break-even

Break-even is the ordinary spend at which the points value at ₹1 each equals the GST-inclusive fee, before any milestone or waiver.

Card Fee after GST Renewal bonus Net fee Break-even spend at 3.33%
Diners Club Black Metal ₹11,800 None ₹11,800 About ₹3.5 lakh; fee waived anyway at ₹8 lakh
Infinia Metal ₹14,750 12,500 points About ₹2,250 About ₹68,000; fee waived at ₹10 lakh

Infinia breaks even on almost any spend because of the renewal points. The Diners card needs ₹3.5 lakh of spend to cover its fee in points and ₹8 lakh to waive it, both of which its target applicant has.

Upgrade path

Diners Club Black Metal is the usual card before Infinia. HDFC's invitations go to cardholders with a year or more of clean history on Black Metal or Regalia Gold, spend at or above the ₹8 lakh to ₹10 lakh waiver marks, heavy SmartBuy use and a relationship with the bank. The upgrade ladder guide covers timelines and what to say. Points carry across because both cards earn HDFC Reward Points.

Common questions

Is Infinia better than Diners Club Black? Slightly, on paper: renewal points, a higher SmartBuy cap, utilities earning, unlimited golf, Visa or Mastercard acceptance. The Diners card wins on the quarterly milestone at ₹4 lakh a quarter and on availability.

SmartBuy difference? Infinia 10X on flights and hotels with a 15,000-point monthly cap; Diners 10X on hotels, 5X on flights with a 10,000-point cap.

Is Diners accepted everywhere? No; carry a Visa or Mastercard for small merchants and fuel.

Can I apply for Infinia? No form; it is invitation-led. Diners Club Black Metal is the card you apply for on the way.

Better fee waiver? Diners at ₹8 lakh vs Infinia at ₹10 lakh, but Infinia's renewal points make its net fee about ₹2,250 regardless.
