This is for American Express cardholders in India with a Membership Rewards balance and a question about what to do with it. It settles the partner list, which cards get the 1:1 airline transfers, what a point is worth on each redemption path by card, and how the paths compare on a real award.

Quick Answer: The Platinum Charge Card transfers points 1:1 and fee-free to eight airlines including KrisFlyer, Emirates, Qatar and Air India, and redeems them at ₹1 on Amex Travel; on MRCC, Gold and Platinum Travel the points are worth ₹0.25 to ₹0.50 on vouchers and the transfer options are narrower, so the Gold Collections and the Taj and Postcard vouchers are usually the better paths.

The partner list by card

Amex India's transfer options depend on which card you hold. The Platinum Charge Card has the full list; the lower cards have a subset.

British Airways Avios Airline 1:1 Listed Limited Not listed

Postcard Hotels Hotel vouchers Not listed Not listed Not listed 20,000 points = ₹10,000

"Listed" means the programme is recorded as a transfer option for that card; the ratio below the Platinum Card is set per partner in the Membership Rewards portal and our data does not carry a verified figure for it, so check the portal before transferring. Platinum Card transfers post immediately to within 48 hours with no fee; MRCC transfers take 5 to 10 business days.

What a point is worth on each path

Redemption path Platinum Charge Platinum Travel Gold Card MRCC
Amex Travel flights and hotels ₹1.00 ₹0.50 ₹0.50 ₹0.50
Gift vouchers ₹0.50 ₹0.50 (Platinum Collection) ₹0.50 (18 Karat and 24 Karat Gold Collections) ₹0.25
Statement credit ₹0.50 ₹0.50 ₹0.50 ₹0.25
Taj voucher Discounts, not a points path ₹0.40 (25,000 points for ₹10,000) Via the Gold Collections Not listed
Postcard Hotels voucher Not listed ₹0.50 (20,000 points for ₹10,000) Not listed Not listed
Air India voucher Transfer at 1:1 instead ₹0.30 (20,000 points for ₹6,000) Not listed Not listed
Airline transfer at 1:1 1 partner mile, typically ₹0.50 to ₹2.00 by award Not available Limited Available, ratio per portal

Two things follow. On the Platinum Card, Amex Travel at ₹1 is the floor and a 1:1 transfer only beats it on awards worth more than ₹1 a mile, which premium-cabin long-haul awards usually are. On the other three cards, the fixed-value paths at ₹0.50 are usually the practical ceiling, and the Taj and Air India voucher paths on Platinum Travel are worse than the Platinum Collection.

The Gold Collections

The Amex Gold Card's signature redemption is the Gold Collection. The 18 Karat Gold Collection exchanges 18,000 points for a choice of vouchers and experiences from partners such as Taj, Tanishq, Shoppers Stop, Flipkart, Myntra and Amazon; the 24 Karat Gold Collection exchanges 24,000 points for a higher tier. Both value the points at about ₹0.50, which is the same as the card's statement-credit rate, so the collections are convenient rather than lucrative. Platinum Travel's equivalent is the Platinum Collection, where the 10,000-point milestone at ₹4 lakh of spend is designed to be redeemed.

The point of the collections is that they set a floor of ₹0.50 on cards whose transfer options are thin. A Gold cardholder with 18,000 points has a ₹9,000 Taj voucher available at any time without needing an award seat.

Worked example: 1 lakh points on each card

Assume a Delhi to Singapore business-class award on KrisFlyer at about 62,000 miles one way against a cash fare of about ₹1.2 lakh, so a KrisFlyer mile is worth about ₹1.90 on this award.

Card Best fixed path Value Transfer path Value
Platinum Charge Amex Travel at ₹1 ₹1,00,000 1:1 to KrisFlyer, 1 lakh miles, about 1.6 awards About ₹1.9 lakh
Platinum Travel Platinum Collection or Postcard vouchers at ₹0.50 ₹50,000 Not available Not available
Gold Card 24 Karat Gold Collection at ₹0.50 ₹50,000 Limited; ratio per portal Unverified
MRCC Travel portal at ₹0.50 ₹50,000 KrisFlyer, ratio per portal, 5 to 10 days Unverified

The Platinum Card row is the whole case for its ₹66,000 + GST (₹77,880) fee as a points card: the same 1 lakh points are worth ₹1 lakh on Amex Travel and nearly twice that on a good transfer, against ₹50,000 on every other Amex card. The Amex fees guide covers what the fee buys beyond the points.

How to decide, in order

  1. Know your card's floor. ₹1 a point on the Platinum Card via Amex Travel; ₹0.50 on Platinum Travel, Gold and MRCC via the collections, vouchers or the travel portal.
  2. On the Platinum Card, price the award. Cash fare divided by miles required; transfer if the answer is above ₹1, book Amex Travel if not.
  3. On the other cards, use the fixed paths unless the portal shows a transfer ratio that beats ₹0.50 a point on your specific award.
  4. Avoid the devalued voucher paths on Platinum Travel. The Taj voucher at ₹0.40 and the Air India voucher at ₹0.30 are below the Platinum Collection's ₹0.50.
  5. Do not rush. Amex points do not expire, so waiting for an award seat or a transfer bonus costs nothing.

Hotel transfers and status

The Platinum Card includes Marriott Bonvoy Gold and Hilton Honors Gold status, which matter more than hotel point transfers: room upgrades and breakfast on every stay are worth more than the points from a transfer at typical Indian hotel redemption values of about ₹0.50 a Bonvoy point. MRCC and Gold cardholders can transfer to Marriott, and MRCC to Hilton, but at ₹0.50 a hotel point the transfer rarely beats the ₹0.50 voucher floor; it makes sense only to top up a balance for a specific stay.

Who should transfer

Transfer if:

  • You hold the Platinum Charge Card and have a premium-cabin award on KrisFlyer, Emirates, Qatar, Cathay, Air India or Flying Blue in mind.
  • The award prices a mile above ₹1 after you have checked the cash fare.

Use the fixed paths if:

  • You hold Platinum Travel, the Gold Card or MRCC; the Platinum Collection, the Gold Collections and the MRCC travel portal at ₹0.50 are the practical ceiling.
  • You want economy flights or domestic hotels, where awards rarely beat the floor.

Hold the points if:

  • You are waiting for applications to reopen so you can add the Platinum Card and transfer from a stronger position; points never expire, and Amex has run transfer bonuses before.
